The term ‘Research Infrastructure’ refers to facilities, resources or services of a unique nature that have been identified by European research communities to conduct toplevel activities in all fields of science. This definition includes the associated human resources, covers major equipment or sets of instruments and knowledge-containing resources such as collections, archives and data banks. RI may be located at a single site (for example, large telescopes or synchrotron light sources) or can be distributed across a large number of sites working jointly (for example, biobanks, archives or marine stations).
